MORRISTOWN, Tenn. -- Last friday, March 7, 2008 Republican Congressman David Davis held a closed door meeting with representatives of County Sheriff’s Department and City Police Department officials from the 11 counties of the 1st Congressional District. At the closed-door meeting, “Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) along with state and local law enforcement agencies [were gathered] to educate [them] on what additional roles or functions they may be able to provide in the fight against illegal immigration and for ICE to understand the concerns state and local agencies have when fighting to control our illegal immigration problem,” according to a release from the congressman’s office. At the closed-door meeting, the central point to educate was about section 287(g). According the the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRAIRA) section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is allowed to make agreements with state and local law enforcement agencies to act as immigration enforcement in cities and towns if they receive proper training under the supervision of U.S. Immigration and customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. |
